GEA receives 38 MEUR order from the United States

Bochum/New York, February 23, 2009 – The GEA Group has received the order to design, manufacture and erect the Air Cooled Condenser for the 575 MWe Astoria II combined cycle power plant in Queens/New York City (USA). The order volume is approximately EUR 38 million. The project will be executed by GEA Power Cooling in Denver/Colorado (USA) from 2009 until 2011. The Air Cooled Condenser bundles will be manufactured in GEA’s new manufacturing plant in Celaya (Mexico).

“This order shows us, that there is demand for environmentally friendly cooling technology in the US-market. In the U.S., there is a trend to replace existing power plant capacity with new, efficient and environmentally friendly technologies” says Dr. Helmut Schmale, head of the Thermal Engineering Division of GEA Group.

The use of an Air Cooled Condenser in this power plant project helps to save natural resources as the steam from the power plant is cooled and condensed in a closed system, and thus no water is consumed for the cooling or is delivered to the environment as hot water. As a pioneer in dry cooling, GEA already introduced this technology to large industry applications 90 years ago. Since these early days, GEA constantly developed the technology with respect to both reliability and performance.
